The NEOGEO program offers three teacher professional development workshops: 1. An Earth Science Workshop concentrates on inquiry-based, hands-on activities, short local field excursions, and laboratory investigations that all investigate aspects of Earth Science. A broad spectrum of issues relevant to life on Earth today is considered, including the water cycle, weather, plate tectonics, biogeochemical cycling, ecosystems and biodiversity. more > 2. A 4-day Lake Erie field trip to the Erie Islands and surrounding sites emphasizes spatial relationships between the local geology and the physical processes that have shaped the region (e.g. glaciation, coastal processes, processes over deep time). Teachers participate in “hands-on” science by collecting and analyzing field observations (e.g., water quality measurements, sedimentary exposure logging). more > 3. The SATELLITES geospatial technology institute, a collaboration with OhioView, includes an overview of remote sensing, GIS, and GPS technologies and how they are useful to our understanding of Earth’s surface, oceanic, and atmospheric processes. Indoor and outdoor activities guides teachers to a better understanding of the instruments and software. more > The three workshops above are all available for graduate credit through the College of Education at Kent State University.
